Universities on the 0–100 scale — Israel and much of Europe — work with a weighted average, not a simple one. Each grade is multiplied by the course's credits, everything is added up, and divided by the total credits:
(grade₁ × credits₁ + grade₂ × credits₂ + …) ÷ total credits
The difference isn't theoretical. A 90 in a 4-credit course and an 80 in a 2-credit course give 86.67 weighted — and 85 as a simple average. A big course pulls the average harder, and that's exactly what turns “which course should I invest in” into a question of credits, not just difficulty.
Semester, yearly and cumulative averages
The same formula serves three different calculations, and the only difference is which courses go into it:

The gap between the two is information, not noise. A semester average above the cumulative means this semester pulled the average up; below it means it's pulling it down. That's exactly the signal worth catching mid-degree, while you can still do something with it.
How the course grade is set in the first place — before it enters the average
This calculator assumes you already have a final grade for each course. But that grade itself is, in most courses, built from several components with different weights: an exam, assignments, a project, attendance. That's the weighted course grade, and it's calculated by exactly the same method — just one level down.
The only difference is the unit of weight. Inside a course the weight is percentages (exam 60%, assignments 40%); across the degree the weight is credits. The logic is identical: multiply each grade by its weight, add up, and divide by the total weight.

Two cases that confuse the calculation
A course you retook. When you retake an exam or repeat a course, the question is which grade enters the average — the latest or the highest. That's set by each institution's regulations, and the difference is material: where the latest one stands, retaking with a passing grade in hand is a gamble. Exemptions and transferred credits. A course you were exempted from, or that transferred from another institution, usually grants credits but carries no grade — so it counts toward the degree's credits but not toward the average. If you put it in the calculator, leave the grade field empty.
Worth knowing before you look at the number
The cumulative average moves slowly, and gets slower with time. After 20 credits, a single grade moves it noticeably. After 100 credits, the same grade is barely visible. That works in both directions: it's hard to repair a low average late in the degree, and the same stability also protects it from one bad grade.
Big courses deserve bigger attention. A 5-credit course moves the average more than twice as much as a 2-credit one. And 0-credit tutorials don't enter the calculation at all. Their grade appears on the transcript, but their weight in the formula is zero — they neither lower nor raise it.
Four mistakes that keep recurring in manual calculation

What counts as a good average?
That's the question really behind the search, and it has no single answer — but it has a frame. The average isn't a grade in its own right; it's an entry threshold to other things, each with a bar of its own:
- Continuing to a master's — usually the highest bar, and sometimes judged only on years 2–3 rather than the whole degree
- Scholarships and honors — usually derived from the yearly average, not the cumulative
- Switching track or specialization — sometimes judged on the core courses only
- Staying in the program — the lowest bar of them all, but the most binding
No numbers were written here on purpose. The thresholds vary between institutions, faculties and academic years, and a number from a forum or a group chat is worth exactly nothing. Your relevant bar comes from the program handbook or the faculty office — in one conversation.
What can be said with certainty: the difference between those bars is bigger than the difference between an 84 and an 86. It's worth finding out which bar you're aiming at before spending a whole semester chasing a point.

How do you calculate a grade average weighted by credits?
Multiply each grade by the course's number of credits, add up all the products, and divide by the total credits. For example: a 90 in a 4-credit course and an 80 in a 2-credit course give (90×4 + 80×2) divided by 6, which is 86.67 — not 85 as a simple average would.
What is the difference between a simple and a weighted average?
A simple average divides the sum of grades by the number of courses and treats them all as equal. A weighted average gives more weight to courses with more credits. Universities on the 0–100 scale use the weighted one, so a 5-credit course moves the average more than twice as much as a 2-credit course.
Does a course with 0 credits count toward the average?
No. A course without credits — a tutorial or an enrichment course — gets zero weight in the formula, meaning its grade doesn't change the average at all. You can leave it in the calculator; it simply won't have an effect.
How do you calculate a semester average separately from the cumulative one?
With exactly the same formula — the only difference is which courses go into it. For a semester average enter only that semester's courses; for the cumulative one enter every course since the start of the degree. The gap between the two is useful information: a semester average above the cumulative means this semester is pulling the average up.
What is a weighted course grade and how is it different from an average?

On the 0–100 scale there's usually no conversion — the grade already arrives on a 0 to 100 scale, and that 100 is also 100%. What does require calculation is when a grade is built from components each carrying a weight percentage: then you multiply each grade by its percentage, add up, and divide by 100. That's exactly the weighted course grade calculation.
