Best AI for Studying: ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude vs NotebookLM
The short answer: no single model wins at everything, so pick by the job. To study from your own course material, the best fit is Gemini Notebook, called NotebookLM until July 2026. To understand a new topic, ChatGPT in study mode or Gemini with Guided Learning. To find sources, Perplexity. If you want to pay nothing, free ChatGPT plus free Gemini Notebook covers most of what a student needs.
How we checked: we read the official pricing and help pages on 2026-11-02. We did not run a test of answer quality, so these picks rest on what each tool actually offers and on learning research, not on a score we made up. Disclosure: we build Focusity, and its smart tools run on models from Anthropic, the company behind Claude. Keep that in mind when you read about Claude.

What each tool does
ChatGPT: explanations, and study mode for free
Study mode is available on every plan, on web and in the apps. Instead of handing you the answer, it asks what you already know, explains in layers and checks that you understood. You can upload notes, slides, a syllabus or a photo of a problem, and ask for a quiz one question at a time. To turn it on, type @study in the message box or pick Study from the + menu.
The free plan has unlimited text chat (with abuse guardrails) and limited uploads. On the US App Store Go is $8 and Plus is $19.99 a month, and Go may include ads. We found no student discount on the pricing page. The same page says your content is used to train the models, with an opt-out.
Good at: understanding a topic from scratch and practising, at no cost. Watch out: without study mode it just gives the answer, which is exactly what hurts learning (more below).
Gemini: lots of tools, and a student offer
Gemini has Guided Learning, a mode that teaches a topic in steps, and you can ask it for quizzes and flashcards. The help page says creating these isn't available to users under 18. The free plan includes the Flash-Lite model, Deep Research and Gemini Live. On the US App Store Google AI Plus is $4.99 and Pro is $19.99 a month. The plans page doesn't say which plan includes Guided Learning.
The student offer is the best reason to try it: a free year of Google AI Plus, for students 18 and over, if you claim it by December 31, 2026. You need a payment method, eligibility is re-checked every year, and after the year it renews at the regular price unless you cancel. We read the page from Israel, so check that it applies in your country, and set a reminder to cancel.
Good at: the most study features for no money, if you qualify. Watch out: the automatic renewal.
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM: study from your own material
On July 16, 2026, Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. It's the same product and stays a standalone tool, so what you've read about NotebookLM still applies. You upload material into a notebook and, according to Google, it answers from those sources. If the answer isn't in them, it won't give one. That's the difference from a normal chat.
From your sources you can create flashcards and quizzes with the difficulty and length you choose, download the cards as a CSV file, and get an audio overview of the material. Signing up is free with a Google account, and the free plan allows up to 100 notebooks and 50 sources in each. Paid plans raise those limits, and Google notes they can change.
Good at: revising for an exam from your course slides, without the model pulling in material from elsewhere. Watch out: it's only as good as what you upload, so it can't fill the gaps in your notes.
Claude: tidy projects, no study mode for individual students
Claude's free plan has chat on web and in the apps, web search, memory across chats and up to 5 projects, so each course can live on its own. Use is limited both every 5 hours and every week. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly at $200. There is no plan for an individual student. Learning mode appears on the pricing page only under Education, which an institution buys for a whole campus.
Good at: keeping each course in its own project. Watch out: with no built-in study mode, you have to tell it not to give answers yourself, using the prompt below.
Perplexity: search with sources
Perplexity works as a search engine that answers with links to its sources, so it fits best when you're writing a paper and need to find articles. The free plan has practically unlimited basic searches and 3 Pro searches a day. Pro is $17 a month billed yearly or $20 a month on the App Store. Verified students can get Education Pro at $10 a month, with Learn Mode and unlimited Pro searches.
Good at: starting research for a paper. Watch out: a link next to an answer doesn't mean the source really says that. Open it and read it before you cite it.
Copilot: for people already on Microsoft 365
Copilot has tools for students: a Study and Learn mode, voice sessions on your material with Learn Live, quizzes and flashcards. Microsoft offers a limited free version. In the US, Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month and Premium is $19.99. Microsoft says some schools give students Microsoft 365 at no extra cost, so check what your institution provides before you pay.
Good at: anyone who writes in Word and has an account through their school. Watch out: that page doesn't spell out which study tools are free or what the limits are.
DeepSeek: free, with a privacy question
DeepSeek's site offers a chat and an app, with DeepThink and Search modes, and we found no chat subscription there. According to its privacy policy, your data is stored in China and your input is used to train its models, with a right to opt out. We found no study mode.
Good at: general chat at no cost. Watch out: don't upload personal data or material you aren't allowed to share.
Which AI is best for each study task?
| What you need | What to pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Understand a new topic | ChatGPT study mode, or Gemini Guided Learning | They question you instead of answering for you |
| Revise from your slides | Gemini Notebook | Answers from your sources, and makes quizzes and flashcards |
| Practise questions | A Gemini Notebook quiz, or ChatGPT one question at a time | Recalling from memory strengthens learning |
| Find sources for a paper | Perplexity | Answers come with links you can check |
| Work on a course over time | A Claude project, or a Gemini Notebook notebook | Each course's material stays in one place |
| Study on the move | Gemini Notebook audio overview, or Copilot Learn Live | You hear the material or talk it through |
| Pay nothing at all | ChatGPT and Gemini Notebook, both free | One explains, the other works from your material |
ChatGPT or Gemini for studying?
Both have a study mode, quizzes and an app, so the decision comes down mostly to price. A student 18 or over who qualifies for Google's offer gets a paid Gemini plan free for a year, so start there and remember to cancel on time. If you don't qualify, or don't want to hand over a payment method, start with ChatGPT, whose study mode is on the free plan too.
NotebookLM vs ChatGPT: what's the difference?
ChatGPT answers from the model's general knowledge and can also draw on files you upload. Gemini Notebook answers from your sources, and if the answer isn't there it won't give one. So when your lecturer teaches a specific definition and you want exactly that one, use Notebook. When you don't get the idea at all and need a different explanation from the one in the slides, use ChatGPT.
ChatGPT vs Claude for studying
ChatGPT has study mode built in on every plan. On Claude's pricing page, learning mode appears only on the institution plan, though the free plan's 5 projects are a handy way to keep courses apart. If you want to learn by being questioned, ChatGPT is the simpler start. We did not compare the quality of their answers.
What the research says: AI can also hurt learning
A field experiment published in PNAS in 2025 followed nearly 1,000 high school students in Turkey practising maths. According to Wharton's summary, those given plain ChatGPT did 48% better than the control group during practice, but scored 17% lower on the exam without AI. Those given a version that offered hints rather than answers did 127% better in practice and scored about the same as the control group on the exam. The harm went away, but that version didn't raise the grade either.
A Harvard trial found a different picture: 194 physics students learned more than twice as much with an AI tutor as in an active-learning class, in less time. That tutor was purpose-built: it was given the correct solutions, kept replies to a few sentences, revealed one step at a time and asked students to try first. It's a small sample from one university, and the authors themselves say the result won't necessarily hold in every context.
What the two trials share: the tools that didn't hurt learning made students try on their own before they got help. So use study mode or the prompt below, and don't ask for the answer straight away.
A prompt that turns any AI into a tutor
In a tool with no study mode, or when you want more control, paste this at the start of the chat:
I'm studying [topic] for an exam. Don't give me the answer. Ask me one question at a time, wait for my reply, and if I'm wrong give me one hint only. After three questions, sum up what I'm strong at and what to review. If you're not sure about something, say so.
What to check before you trust an AI
- Check facts: models get things wrong, even with total confidence. Check a definition, formula or quote for an exam against your course material.
- Open the sources: before citing an article in a paper, open it and confirm it exists and says what was claimed.
- Check what's allowed: not in an exam, and for assignments it depends on your lecturer and institution. OpenAI's study mode page says the same.
- Protect your privacy: don't upload personal data, and check the settings to see whether your content trains the model.
- Try before you ask: solve it yourself first, then check with the AI.
For dedicated study tools such as Quizlet and Knowt, there's a separate comparison in AI study tools for university students. To turn exam practice into a method, read how to study with past exam papers.
A language model can explain the material, but it doesn't know when you have time to study it. Focusity imports your timetable and exams, and lays study sessions into your free hours. Planning is free.

What is the difference between NotebookLM and ChatGPT?
ChatGPT answers from the model's general knowledge and can also draw on files you upload. Gemini Notebook answers from your sources, and if the answer isn't there it won't give one. The first is good for a different explanation of an idea, the second for sticking to your lecturer's material.

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for studying?
ChatGPT has study mode built in on every plan. On Claude's pricing page, learning mode appears only on the institution plan, though the free plan has up to 5 projects for keeping courses apart. If you want to learn by being questioned, ChatGPT is the simpler start. We did not compare the quality of their answers.
Does Gemini Notebook work in other languages?
Yes. Its help page lists more than 80 languages for generated text, and the output language setting covers study guides, audio overviews and chat replies. You change it under Settings, then Output Language.
Is it cheating to use AI for studying?
For learning, explanations and practice, no. In an exam it is not allowed, and for assignments it depends on your lecturer and institution, so check for each course. Research also suggests trying a problem yourself before asking for help.
